GIVE KIDS AN ALLOWANCE

Looking back over my childhood, I realize that my loving and nurturing parents were also really insightful in giving my older sister and me an allowance of 25 cents per week. (Back then that was a lot more money than it is today.) Among other things, it taught us accountability because if we didn’t make our beds before breakfast we would lose 5 cents of our allowance. So we weren’t being punished, just being held accountable. And that was a lasting lesson.
In addition, as written in the article entitled “5 Reasons to Give Kids an Allowance” by Mary Hunt in the August 19 – 25, 2026 edition of “The Epoch Times,” there are other good and lasting reasons as well. For example, giving children an allowance will help them learn money management because they will both enjoy and suffer from their financial decisions. Plus it puts to an end to their continual requests for small amounts of money from their parents for this, that or the other thing. And, in addition, it increases their self-esteem by teaching them to choose either to spend money now or to save for long-term goals, or even to give some of their money to charity. Plus they can learn the value of working for pay by providing them money for extra chores on a job-by job basis. So I think all children benefit by their parents giving them a regular allowance.
