Was raised in the Los Angeles area by his parents Elizabeth Gray and U.S. District Judge William P. Gray.  He graduated from John Muir High School in Pasadena in 1962, received his undergraduate degree at UCLA in 1966, and his law degree from USC in 1971.  Judge Gray also served with the Peace Corps in Palmar Norte, Costa Rica, in physical education, recreation and health from 1966 to 1968.
