A FURTHER REQUEST

2 PARAGRAPHS 4 LIBERTY: #362

As I hope you know, last week’s column forwarded to you an article I wrote that was published in the Los Angeles Daily Journal that proposed a plan to bring transparency into our nation’s jails and prisons. And in that article and column I requested that all who read them seek out any media or governmental personnel they knew to help enlist their involvement. For my part, I passed along the article and that request to the New York Times, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal, Denver Times, Los Angeles Times, ABC National News, Orange County Register and a few others. And what responses have I received? Virtually none. It is not my intent whatsoever to start people on a guilt trip but, as I wrote in both the article and column, it is our government and if it isn’t working we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Nevertheless, I am now expanding my request to include the founding of both federal and state commissions to investigate all claims of factual innocence that are made by convicted defendants. I hope you agree with William Blackstone who wrote back in 1769 that “the law holds that it is better that ten guilty persons escape than one innocent person be convicted.” So if convicted defendants maintain that they are factually innocent a neutral government commission should investigate those claims. What better use of government’s money? Of course, if the claims are subsequently found to be baseless, that fact could be later used as a factor in aggravation for lack of rehabilitation when the claimant petitions to be released on parole. So please again consider assisting in this project and, if you do, please give some thought to including forming such innocence commissions as part of your request to the media and governmental officials.

Factoid of the week: When researching for the causes of a large number of deaths of crows on the highways of a particular state, it was found that about 97 percent of them were killed by motorcycles and motor scooters. Probing deeper, it was found that when the crows were on the highways eating road kill they posted sentries to warn them of oncoming traffic. But the problem was that even though all of the sentries could warn of a “cah” coming, none of them knew how to say the word “bike.” (Oh well . . .)
